A Beautiful Hongqi CA770 from China

Published on August 7, 2010 by Tycho

At a local autoshow in Beijing I found this beautiful Hongqi CA770, it was made in 1978 and has a V8 engine. The owner told me it was undergoing restauration and worked all fine. He took the car to the show to “educate” youngsters about China’s rich automotive history. Hongqi is a brand from First Auto Works (FAW) from the city of Changchun in northern Jilin province.

Spy Shots: Hongqi HQE getting Ready for Production

Published on July 27, 2010 by Tycho

Last week we heard FAW-Hongqi was seriously considering production of the CA7600L V12 limosine, to be priced around 4 million yuan. Today’s spy pics however, tell a slightly different story. They show a camouflaged Hongqi HQE, based on the 2005 HQD concept car.

FAW announced in 2008 that is was going to make a limited series of the HQE for government use, the car was scheduled to debut at the military parade in Beijing on August 1 2009. It did, but with a new front in traditional Hongqi-style and a new name; the CA7600L, which made it to the Beijing Auto Show in April.

So here we have the old car, back from the ashes, getting ready for production. It will get the 6 litre 300kw V12 and according to the latest information get a price tag of 3 million yuan. Not sure what this means for the production plans for the CA7600L but I don’t think Hongqi will make two almost similar limo’s at the same time.

Hongqi CA7600L to Go in Production (!?)

Published on July 22, 2010 by Tycho

FAW, owner of the Hongqi-brand, is seriously considering to bring the massive CA7600L to the market. If all goed to plan the limosine will keep the 5.985 litre 300kw V12 but will lose all armor. The CA7600L was originally meant to be made as a small series for government use only, but the car caused such a stir on the Beijing Auto Show that FAW decided some form of mass production might make sense. Debut date yet unknown but we do know the price: it will cost around 4 million yuan, that is 589.000 US dollar.

China Toy Car: FAW-Hongqi CA7600L

Published on May 17, 2010 by Tycho

A very nice model of the now famous Hongqi CA7600L. Scale is 1:43, diecast, and I bought is for only 35rmb in a toy store near my home. For such a small sum the car is very wel detailled and everything fits together fine. A minor drawback are the flagpoles, mirrors and microphones. Cheap toys like this don’t come in boxes so parts that are vunarable are usually made of flexible rubber. Fine for sure but I couldn’t get the flagpoles to rise up again.

This is the FAW-Hongqi CA7221L. It is based on an Audi 100 platform but stretched by Hongqi itself. Spotted in China: Hongqi CA7180A2E and CA7182MT3

Published on May 13, 2010 by Tycho

Today a very beautiful day in Beijing and it got even better when I found two Hongqi’s parked next to each other. On the left the CA180A2E and on the right the CA7182MT3. Both machines are based on the Audi 100. Hongqi-parent FAW has, and still has, a joint venture with Audi, in those days to produce the 100 for the Chinese market.

The CA180A2E is essentially a rebadged Audi with an Audi engine. The CA7182MT3 is a little bit more a Hongqi-design with a new front and back and a Nissan engine. The CA7182MT3 is also the last Audi-based Hongqi.
