Beijing Auto Show 2008 LIVE: Volkswagen Lavida & New Bora
200408, Beijing Auto Show. One of the most hyped debuts on the show was the Volkswagen Lavida. That there was another car going to make it's debut was known but little was known about is, so the Chinese press called it 'Model X'.
Model X is the New Bora, the old Bora will remain in production by the name Bora Classic. Both cars are similar in size and on the same platform, so you can wonder why.
The Lavida is made in VW's joint venture with Shanghai Automotive, the New Bora in VW's other joint venture with FAW in the north eastern city Changchun. Rumor is that FAW got to know about the Lavida and wanted a similar car
for itself.
VW's cars from those joint venture do compete with eachother in the market already and these two will make that worse. Another rumor is that
VW wants to slash the FAW joint venture and go on with Shanghai alone, but so far the government has not allowed VW to do so.
