Published on July 26, 2010 by Tycho

Beijing Auto will build around 3000 C71EV’s, the electric version of the C71 which is based on the old Saab 9-5. Beijing Auto will set up a network of chargers around the city in a joint venture with the Beijing government, which by la way is also the biggest shareholder of Beijing Auto.

The project is essentially the same as an earlier project with an electric vehicle based on a Chrysler Sebring. When the Beijing Auto-Chrysler joint venture died the project was canceled. It is now back with a new car. The Sebrings were meant to be used as taxi’s only with a planned production of one thousand cars. The C71EV will likely see more different buyers.

Old Pic: First Beijing-Jeep Cherokee Rolling of the Line

Published on June 1, 2010 by Tycho

Found this beautiful old picture from the Beijing-Jeep factory in Beijing. It is 1985 and the first Beijing-Jeep Cherokee rolls of the line. It got an extra name for China: BJ213. The China-Cherokee came with a 2.5 4-cilinder, 5-speed manual and 4wd. Beijing-Jeep was a joint venture between Beijing Auto Works and American Motors Corporation (AMC). AMC was later bought by Chrysler and Chrysler by Benz. The Beijing-Jeep joint venture excist no more but the Cherokee is still alive.

BAW makes it on their own now, it’s named ‘Qishi’ and costs 90.000 rmb. I got a green 1998 Beijing-Jeep Cherokee, more on that one later.

More Details on the Sebring-based Beijing Auto BE701EV

Published on May 30, 2010 by Tycho

Earlier this month I wrote an article on the Beijing Auto BE701 but details were scarce. Today I saw the car at the Beijing International High Tech Exhibtion and found out a bit more. The BE701 is based on a Chrysler Sebring. The Sebring was made in China by a joint venture between Beijing Auto and Chrysler, that jv is now dead. Plan was to make the a couple of thousand BE701 ’s for a pilot electric-taxi project in Beijing. But now the jv is gone, it loox like that plan is gone too. So likely this BE7101 will be a one-off for ever.

Spy Shots: Beijing Auto B60 / Saab 9-3 hits the Beijing Roads

Published on May 28, 2010 by Tycho

A Beijing Auto B60 was seen riding around the BAW factories in Beijing. But this time BAW didn’t even bother to hide any Saab-origins, as they did a bit on the Beijing Auto Show when the B60 debuted. This is due to la fact that the car on the pics ain’t no China-made car at all, the factory isn’t ready yet, it is a real Saab from Sweden. BAW is likely road testing the 9-3 for adjustments needed for Chinese roads.

Beijing Auto might start selling some rebadged Swedish Saabs as B60’s before the China-made-B60 starts rolling of the line. These will be more expensive but Beijing Auto can keep attention up. The factory is expected to be ready in a year.
